Zero waste bags

Our Spanish partner Creamodite recently visited Lady Bolsos to discuss possibilities for manufacturing zero waste bags with leather.

The choice of material might come as a surprise to most, but that was exactly the point of discussion.

Is leather more sustainable?

We discussed the sustainability of leather as opposed to most vegan alternatives on the market.

We came to the conclusion that pleather and synthetic leather, made mostly from non-biodegradable materials, lasts very little, has performance issues (peels off easily) and has a negative impact on the enviornment.

In conrast, real leather is biodegradable and is more endurable. Together with the recent improvements in the management of the disposal of chemical dyes, leather is emerging once more as a viable and sustainable option.

Zero waste patterns on leather

As a result of our conversation and extensive exchange, we came to the conclusion that exploring the development of zero waste pattern methods for leather would be a worthwhile endeavor.

Perhaps one challenge would be the difficulty of finding local leather manufacturers in Spain, given that they have difficulties dealing with the competition from China and Turkey. However, we are hopeful that consumers are beginning to value locally produced products and will prefer them.
